Step-by-step guide to removing jackets, coats and layers from a photo with AI, while keeping the person clothed.
Removing clothes from a photo used to mean hours in Photoshop: masking edges, rebuilding the background, fixing shadows. An AI clothes remover does the same job in seconds — as long as you set the edit up properly. This guide walks through the whole process and the prompts that produce clean results.
Quality in, quality out. The tool works best on a well-lit image where the garment you want removed has a clear edge against what is underneath. Front-facing poses, even lighting and a plain background all help. Avoid heavy motion blur, extreme backlighting and garments that are mostly hidden behind bags or other people.
Make sure you own the photo or have permission to edit it, and that the subject is an adult who consented. Those are not just rules on this site — they are what makes the edit lawful in most jurisdictions.
“Remove the clothes” is too vague and often gets rejected or produces a sloppy result. Describe the specific layer: “the navy winter coat”, “the wool scarf and the puffer jacket”. Say what should remain visible underneath, because that is what the model has to reconstruct.
Add a constraint to the prompt: preserve face, body shape, pose, lighting and background. Modern tools keep identity stable by default, but stating it explicitly reduces drift on difficult poses — arms across the body, hands near the garment edge, strong side lighting.
Check four things every time: the neckline and collar, the seams at the shoulders, the hands, and the shadow the removed garment cast on the body and floor. If any of them look wrong, regenerate with a stricter prompt rather than patching by hand.
For marketplaces, export at the platform's native size — 2000 × 2000 px for Amazon apparel, 2048 × 2048 px for Shopify. For social, 1080 × 1350 px (4:5) fills more of the feed. Downloads carry an invisible watermark identifying them as AI-edited, which is what most platforms now require.
With those five steps, removing clothes from a photo is a two-minute job instead of an afternoon — and the result still looks like the same person in the same room.
